HWANGE WOMEN STAND GUARD: DEFENDING THEIR GARDENS AGAINST DUCK RAIDS

To shield their precious nutrition gardens from relentless duck invasions during the night, the tenacious women of Hwange have resorted to innovative tactics.

Faced with financial strain brought on by a disappointing crop season, Diana Makwara highlighted the vital role these gardens play as their primary source of income. ”Crops failed in the 2023-2024 farming season, and we had hoped these methods would help sustain our families and meet school fees,” she expressed.

Khesiwe Ncube voiced the growing dilemma as the women found themselves at a crossroads with the law. ”The regulations strictly forbid harming the feathered intruders. We are grappling to strike a balance between conservation and sustenance. Despite reaching out to CAMPFIRE for assistance, no response has been received since the issue began,” she lamented.

Undeterred, these resilient farmers remain steadfast in their round-the-clock vigil over their beloved greenery, seeking a lasting resolution to their nocturnal challenges. Both women shared that they have been sleeping at the irrigation site since March to safeguard their crops.

Shangano Arts Festival (SAF) engaged the embattled farmers earlier today in pursuit of a remedy. According to the SAF director, various stakeholders must unite and implement a sustainable solution that fosters a harmonious coexistence between the ducks and the farmers.
