DIGITAL EMPOWERMENT: THE WAY FOR PEACE CREATION

In a country like Zimbabwe, where access to education and resources is limited, digital literacy can transform the lives of rural and marginalized girls. With only 32% of girls in Zimbabwe completing secondary education, it is clear that there is a pressing need to empower these young women through digital literacy.

Digital literacy is not just about learning how to use a computer or navigate the internet. It is about giving girls the tools to access information, communicate with others, and develop critical thinking skills. In a world where technology is becoming increasingly important, digital literacy is essential for success in education and the workforce.

By providing rural and marginalized girls with digital literacy skills, we empower them to take control of their lives and promote peace and stability in Zimbabwe. Studies have shown that when girls are educated and empowered, they are less likely to be victims of violence and more likely to contribute positively to their communities.

Advocacy is changing from the conventional community dialogue, focus group discussion, and street protests, and the dynamic environment needs for the main subjects, the girls, to take up the roles and be the face and body of the struggle. To champion their change. CSOs must focus on developing girls’ capacities, skills, and abilities in digital discourse, engagement, and presence. Advocacy has moved to digital spaces on “X,” Facebook, and other platforms; hence, there is a need to encourage participation and empower and capacitate girls to move to digital spaces.

According to UNICEF, only 5% of rural girls in Zimbabwe have access to the internet, compared to 42% of urban girls. This digital divide widens the gap between rural and urban communities, further marginalizing those already disadvantaged. Investing in digital literacy programs for rural and marginalized girls can bridge this gap and give these young women the opportunity to thrive.

There are numerous benefits to digitally empowering girls. Not only does it increase their access to information and resources, but it also opens up new opportunities for education and employment. With digital literacy skills, girls can pursue careers in technology, engineering, and entrepreneurship, breaking down traditional gender barriers and paving the way for a more equal society. Girls’ digital participation is essential for several reasons, such as access to information. Digital platforms give girls access to information about their rights, health, education, and other vital issues, empowering them to advocate for themselves and their communities, connection to global networks for their growth for an international purpose. Digital platforms also allow girls to connect with global networks of activists and advocates, which can amplify their voices and provide support for their advocacy efforts.
In a world where technology is advancing rapidly, we must equip all girls with the skills they need to succeed. By investing in digital literacy for rural and marginalized girls in Zimbabwe, we empower them to reach their full potential and promote peace and stability in the country. It is time to prioritize the education and empowerment of these young women, for the future of Zimbabwe depends on it.
