The Girls Table

Women Empowerment

A lot is being said nowadays on the need for women empowerment. As we are all aware, women are the ones who continue to suffer the most as they are treated inferior in society as compared to their male counterparts. Women are lagging behind in all fields. Despite all the media hype regarding the equality of genders; things are yet to improve for women.

Child marriage is still prevalent in many parts of the society. Girls are not being sent to school in many areas. Incidents of sexual harassment of women and rape cases are on the rise. Thousands of widows are living in poverty and young women in the workforce continue to be oppressed in the absence of proper legislation to protect them. In such a situation, it is no surprise that the birth of a girl child is still considered to be a curse and an occasion for sorrow in thousands of families.

In such situations, some enlightened people have started asking for the empowerment of women. They rightly feel that there is no chance for the welfare of the nation unless the rights of women are improved. ”It is not possible for a bird to fly on only one wing” they say.
